Secret Agent Man - Chase Fraud Protection Commercial
This commercial from Chase is one of my favorites from a variety of angles.
First, there’s a hidden “easter egg” at the very beginning of the commercial. If you look closely, 007 is spelled out in the background during the first 3 seconds. It’s not easy to pick out, and the average person won’t discover this on the first view. But the two tires make up the 00 and the 7 is made of 2 pieces of wood that come together at an angle.
Again, Chase doesn’t make this central to the commercial. But notice the effect. Chase has gotten people like me talking about it. And I’m sure there are others on the Internet who have discovered the same thing and are talking about it too. It’s the sort of thing that could easily go viral with friends showing friends this hidden piece of information.
This subtle little addition to the commercial has the real potential of turning it into a “classic” that people talk about for a long time.
But a hidden feature isn’t what makes the commercial great. After all, most people probably won’t notice. This credit card fraud protection commercial from Chase succeeds on several other levels as well. For example, it takes a relatively boring topic and makes it extremely exciting. It’s got movie-like production quality. It has a cool coloring effect that makes people notice.
Plus, it creates the ultimate association -> Who wouldn’t want the protection of a James Bond figure?
This commercial makes a clear point to the consumer: You need protection, and the best protection you can get comes from Chase.
